Two weeks later, George brought home a copy of the Massachusetts Gazette & Boston Weekly Newsletter and handed it to Mary without comment. On December 16, men dressed as Indians left a meeting at the Old South Church in Boston and proceeded to Griffin’s Wharf where they boarded the Dartmouth, Eleanor, and Beaver to empty their chests of tea into the harbor. In the space of three hours, the men destroyed 90,000 pounds of tea without causing any other property damage.
Mary raised her eyes from the page. “What happens now?” she whispered.
George shrugged. “The tea is worth about ten thousand pounds. I suspect the East India Company will want to be compensated.”
“What will Governor Hutchinson do?”
“No one knows. He’ll probably write for instructions. One way or another, we’ll pay a price for our actions.”
