Lydia stirred her coffee and made a face. “No matter how much milk I add, I still think coffee is vile. But since my husband joined the Salem Sons of Liberty, he won’t have tea in the house. It’s ridiculous. But what’s going on here? I thought you only drank smuggled tea.”
Mary grimaced. “With the chaos in Boston, it occurred to me that if my brothers or their associates see me drinking tea, they won’t think to ask where I buy it.”
“Very prudent.” Lydia took a sip of coffee and shuddered. “I hope things will settle down now that British warships and troops are in Boston. I’m told the officers are quite civil.”
Mary shook her head, twirling a spoon through her coffee. “The men pitched their camp on Boston Common . . . Can you imagine if that happened here?”
