Mary placed a pearl earring in each ear and patted the dark curls that came down on the right side of her face. Even if she had to attend this wedding unescorted, she fully intended to face down the bride.
Mary scowled into the mirror. If only Father hadn’t sent George out on what seemed to be the longest voyage in Salem history. First to Gibraltar to acquire the former French ship Ranger, then to the Wine Islands for cargo, then to the West Indies to sell the wine and pick up a new cargo he was supposed to take to Italy. What was Father thinking? He knew George couldn’t be back in time for his sister’s wedding to Hasket. He could have sent a different ship’s master so George could come home.
