“Miss Derby,” George said, “I have something to tell you.”
“I’m not interested in anything you have to say,” Mary said bluntly, gazing out at the open ocean. The breeze tousled her hair. “Did my brother put you up to this, or was it your idea?”
George sighed, jaw tight. “I warned him you would not appreciate his efforts.”
“Let’s just enjoy the day,” Mary parried. “My brother should not have put you in such an awkward position.”
“It’s not the least bit awkward. I no longer wish to court you, so there is no reason for either of us to feel uncomfortable.”
Mary felt her stomach lurch. “You don’t?”
“A man can only take so much rejection,” he said in a steady voice. “I’ve accepted command of a schooner to the West Indies.”
“Oh.” Mary felt her emotions deflate.
