Would you like to live here? We can stroll the grounds. Anstiss put some flowers in the front, as you see. And in the back, there’s a small summer house, and a barn. And the kitchen, of course. Shall we look?”
Mary let George guide her around the outside of the house.

George’s ongoing description of the property could not overcome the roaring in Mary’s head. I will not be rushed into a marriage I do not want. Mary peeked into the empty kitchen with its cold hearth. “I prefer an attached kitchen. It provides heat for the house in winter,” Mary said.
“Then we’ll extend the house and put in whatever arrangement you like.” George smiled to himself. “Would you like to look inside? I have the key.”
