“What does set your course, Mr. Crowninshield?”
George held Mary’s eyes for several minutes, before rising from his chair, and taking a seat next to her on the sofa.
“Ambition sets my course of business.” George reached for her hand, and she couldn’t find it within herself to pull away. “But you, Miss Derby, set the course of my life. Success will be meaningless without you.” He shifted his position to one closer to her, keeping his eyes locked on hers. “Miss Derby, I beg you. Accept my suit.”
It would be so easy to do as he asks. My parents more than approve. My future will be settled. He looks so earnest . . .
“Mr. Crowninshield, I . . .”
“Oh no!” Sarah’s frantic voice broke in. “I dropped my needle, and then the cup overturned. Quick, I need a cloth.”
