George occupied the straight chair across from Captain Derby’s desk and attempted to make himself comfortable. “Do you have a ship for me, sir? I have good experience clerking for my brother, Captain John Crowninshield.”
“That’s not why I want to speak to you.”
“It isn’t?”
Captain Derby studied him for a moment, as though attempting to assess if the young man before him was as stupid as he seemed. George tried to appear confident. Eventually, the Captain sat forward in his chair and said, “You’ve been spending a great deal of time with my daughter.”
“Yes, sir.”
“What are your intentions toward her?”
