“He wants to take Sarah and I on a carriage ride,” she told Hasket, handing him the letter for him to read for himself. “What do you think?”
Hasket shrugged. “If Mother approves, you should go. Don’t deny our sister a treat because Crowninshield didn’t dance with you.”
When Mrs. Derby entered the breakfast room, Mary handed her the note. “A carriage ride?” Mrs. Derby exclaimed. “Darling, you must go. He wants to see more of you. Captain Derby will be so pleased. Be sure to take extra wraps, though . . . the weather is so changeable this time of year.”
“It’s just a carriage ride, Mother.”
“Of course, dear. Wear your cotton dress with the floral print, and your straw hat. Don’t forget parasols for yourself and Sarah.”
