“Father, the most exciting event has happened.”
Captain Crowninshield raised a quizzical eyebrow. “And what might that be?”
“Eliza exaggerates,” Mrs. Crowninshield said. “It’s simply a letter from Derby House that is somehow addressed to me. I’m sure it’s just a business matter that has been misdirected.”
“Pass it to me, and I’ll have a look.”
Eliza watched the letter pass from hand to hand until it reached her father. It’s not business. I’m sure it’s not.
Captain Crowninshield broke the wax seal with the Derby initial and slowly opened the thick paper. As he read, his wiry eyebrows rose from their usual place to his hairline—a rare expression from a typically stoic man.
“Well . . .” He cleared his throat. “This is most unusual.”
