After supper, the family settled near windows in the front parlor to take advantage of the light. Mrs. Derby and her older daughters caught up on sewing projects while Richard read the newspaper and his sons played whist.
“That game is a waste of time,” Richard grumbled.
“I believe, Father, it was you who wanted us to learn the ways of gentlemen,” Hasket said. “And card games are part of that, are they not? Why don’t you join us?”
“Mrs. Derby,” Richard asked, “how long does it take to plan a wedding? Not just making vows, but one with a social aspect, such as ours was?”
Everyone’s head swiveled to face him. “A wedding!” they all said in unison.
