Though Matt despised the alt-right he felt an urgent need to counter the onslaught of personal and professional animosity accusing him of, if not being one of them, then providing a platform for their rhetoric. Letters to the Editor were being published that barely referenced his article, and op-ed pieces countering his argument could be summed up as saying so what if the pendulum had swung the other way, it was justified and overdue. It all came down to a dark day for literatu re and writers. He wanted an opportunity to articulate his views and vindicate himself but the only media that seemed interested were those with a right-wing audience.
Maybe Rami was right. The story had limited appeal and in a rapidly changing news cycle would soon be forgotten. But did he want it forgotten? After all, he was right. To dismiss the facts with bogus accusations of racism was unfair, was in itself discrimination.
