His wife hated him being called out in the middle of the night. Marlene thought this was all over when he’d retired as Chief of the Vancouver Police Department. She told him not to take this on, but retirement had weighed heavy. He’d done the obligatory Alaska cruise and frankly he didn’t need, nor did he want to slow down. Sure he had a bit of a gut and wouldn’t win any foot chases but he was healthy and more importantly still felt involved, intellectually and professionally.
Truth was, and it was a deep dark one, he couldn’t have turned it down if he wanted to. He owed people – important people, dangerous people. When they asked, you didn’t say no.
