But the Bluffs were not entertaining misery this day. Having reached the summit she continued on into the evergreens where she was enveloped by the tingling, refreshing scent of pine, mingled with the pungent aroma of the forest floor. The shade opened on to a grassy slope leading down to the marsh.
Life was everywhere. Monarch butterflies flitted lazily on the breeze while bumblebees buzzed busily in counterpoint to the bird song that filled the air. Grasshoppers took flight with a click and a whir and big black ants raced back and forth across the warm stone. High above, a pair of bald eagles, floating effortlessly on the updrafts, kept watch. All was as it had been, at home in the Bluffs, in rhythm and in harmony, since the beginning.
As they had so many times before, Miriam’s problems began to diminish as she was infused with the absolute joy and beauty of being alive.
Perhaps he would call tonight, she thought as she headed back, and if not, well… For the moment the Bluffs had put her at peace with herself and the world.
