“Why do we even have to fight this fight?” It was a question he asked himself countless times. He felt embittered by the defeats and increasingly disturbed by the tactics they were forced to use.
“As long as there are people who can justify the annihilation of entire living species to satisfy their greed and need for instant gratification, there will be a need for Terra defendo,” came the textbook response from Luna. “It’s the current reality, unfortunately.”
A reality he was committed to changing, had to change. But he was disillusioned with the fight that required a life in the shadows. One that required him to be on the move, living life without roots, trust, or relationships.
“The way of war is the way of deception”, so said Master Sun, and so it was.
Rising behind Black Mountain, the sun created a nimbus of mauves fading to indigo in the eastern sky. The oblique rays glistened off the droplets of dew strung on the delicate strands of the spider webs, draped among the tufts of grass that squeezed forth from fissures and found purchase in shallow depressions. A wood spider skittered across their clasped hands.
It truly was a special place and deserving of their efforts to be preserved, as were all the other sites they had fought for. Zaahir regretted revealing his misgivings to one of his team members. This was not the time for introspection. It was the time to be a leader. He smiled encouragingly at Luna and stiffly stood.
