Natalie and Keith were spending a Saturday on a friend’s boat. Justin and Kim Simpson had been friends with Natalie and Keith since Natalie started teaching at GCCS, where Kim was the veteran sixth-grade teacher. Kim Simpson had two grown boys and had been teaching for over twenty years. So Natalie often went to her for advice on teaching and life.
While docked near one of the lake’s sandy beaches, Kim and Natalie reclined in the front of the boat. They watched the other families enjoy the warm weather and the cool water. Kim turned to Natalie and asked, “How is your summer going?”
“Pretty good. How about yours?”
“Too fast. I’m going to miss days like this, but it’s always good to get back to school. You seem a little preoccupied lately. What’s going on?”
“It’s that girl, Olivia. I felt I was helping her, but her parents just yanked her out of my Sunday school class. I keep wondering if I should do something.”
“I have two words for you,” Kim stated as she propped up on one elbow and faced Natalie. “Don’t do it.”
“That’s three words.”
“Now you know why I’m stuck in sixth grade,” Kim said, laughing.
“Funny, Kim, but I’m serious.”
