Turn doubt into a question
I had to admit, I really loved my new nest! I treasured the moss and the greenery I added. It was so much nicer than the coop, but I dared not tell Mammie because she was brokenhearted as it was.
I’d have to get used to being up here by myself, so I began reading up on birdcalls and listening for the different sounds. Funny what I paid attention to up here—things that went unnoticed down in the farmyard! I was not too sure how I was going to meet other birds, attract them, or get to meet Type-A again. I thought I’d practice a few birdcalls to see what would happen, so I did.
I wasn’t too happy with my first visitor—Nissi. My secret nickname for him was Mr. Event Planner.
I took a deep breath and decided to try to forgive him, so I could move on.
He said, “Goldie, I know you’re angry with me, and I understand.”
I snapped, “I’M NOT ANGRY!”
Well, I reckon I sure sounded angry.
I suppose I needed to practice that forgiveness thing a little more before I felt it.
He responded, “You see, there is a time for everything. You’re living in a place of strength now. Don’t give up, Goldie. You’re on the right path.”
I was so frustrated with him. “Oh Nissi, you’d tick off the Good Humor bird!” Besides, nothing he’d just said to me made any sense at all.
He flew away, saying as he went, “Be of good cheer. I’ll be checking on you.”
What kind of thing was that to say to someone? “Be of good cheer?”
“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.”
BERTRAND RUSSELL
BRITISH PHILOSOPHER
I kept practicing my calls. Soon, a very colorful, long-tailed bird showed up.
He said his name was Chatty Talker, the humans’ pet. I liked his beak and his talons. In that way, at least, he was more like me, and he was funny and very helpful. He knew all the farm animal sounds, and I thought it was very odd that he talked like the humans. I asked him why he sounded like the humans, and he said the farmer had taught him the sounds and words. I chuckled to myself and thought, “Huh, I guess you can really learn anything you want to!”
After we’d spent a while visiting together, he said, “Don’t get weary in your well-doing. Your life is just getting started!”
