“Owoooooooo.” Wolfson charged at me and I ducked under the exam table and dove under the curtain to the next exam cubicle. Wolfson tore down the curtain, picked up a metal stool and continued to come at me. I ran out to the main hall and back into the adjacent ER room.
“Dr. Glassman what can I do. My God.” Finder was near panic.
I had to get help. “Draw up 150 mg of Thorazine with an 18 gauge needle.” I disappeared back into the ER exam room with Wolfson dripping secretions, his hair wild, and his undershorts clinging to his sweaty pelvis.
“Our MPs are here. Security is here.” Finder gave the announcement as she found the Thorazine vial.
“Have them get this guy. He’s going to bite me for Christ’s sake.”
Nearly all of our MPs and security people were former patients and combat Vietnam returnees. They were impressed into MP Service while awaiting back-to-duty orders.
Three security MPs pounced on Wolfson as he chased me around yet another circle in-and-out of the ER treatment room.
“Owooooooo.” Wolfson dislodged two and carried one MP on his back as he resumed his pursuit of trying to bite me somewhere on my body.
“I have the 150mg of Thorazine drawn up. What do I do now?” Finder shouted as I passed her in the hall with Wolfson and the attached MP only a few feet behind.
“Inject the damn thing right through his clothes–in the thigh. Hurry. I can’t keep this up all night.” Thank God I didn’t smoke and did my biweekly PT. I knew I would fatigue pretty soon though.
LT (JG) Nurse Finder knelt down and wielded the syringe with the Thorazine like she was stabbing a mortal enemy and pushed the plunger down when Wolfson was in front of her.
“Hey. That hurts.” The MP shouted. He got the full load in the back of his thigh. On the next time around the MP let go of Wolfson as the 150 mg of Thorazine turned him into a rubber mannequin and he lay asleep on the floor. The other two MPs pulled him to another room.
“I’ll get another dose ready,” Finder shouted.
I looked over my shoulder. Without the added weight of the MP to slow him down Wolfson was gaining. I had only three more laps left in me. Flash bulbs went off. Someone was taking pictures of this. Shit.
“Okay. I’m going to give it another go.” LT Finder found new courage. She latched on to Wolfson’s boxer shorts.
Wolfson turned around. His shorts were around his thighs but Finder wasn’t letting go. Wolfson’s muscular bare ass was her target and she rammed the 18 gauge needle to its hub and injected the Thorazine. More flash bulbs went off.
What happened next was amazing.
“Owoooooooooooooo.” Wolfson’s howl was decreasing in amplitude. He was now moving in slow motion–like someone trying to run in invisible quicksand. He finally lay on the floor with his red conjunctiva eyes, dripping saliva and growling exhalations.
My lungs were on fire. I was sweating as much as Wolfson and bent down to check him out. He was immobilized with the drug but it would wear off and I hadn’t any idea how long it would last. In a normal person it would keep them zombie-like for six-hours. We used it a lot on wild drunks.
“Finder, have the MPs get a straight jacket on him.” I looked up at my heroic nurse. Her cap was gone, her hair was all over the place, her face was flushed but she had the look of victory as she held up the straight jacket.
Wolfson was easy to bundle up now. He seemed totally detached from his environment. “Take him to the locked psychiatric unit and put him in the rubber room so he won’t hurt himself when the Thorazine wears off.” I looked at my heroine Finder. “Good job. Did anyone call the psych watch officer–Dr. Boswell
