“I heard something from two of the girls.” Fern Ferndock lay beside Pignast. The piano playing from the saloon’s bar could be just faintly distinguished with its tinny music sound.
“About Danzer and his cutthroats?”
“They talked about finally doing the job they’re getting paid for. The scraggly one from Tennessee drank too much. He said he was going to miss his regular girl, Daisy, because he’d soon be leaving.”
“Did he say something specific about Serenity or Jake Cotter?” Pignast turned on his side to face her.
“They didn’t mention Serenity specifically, Mort. The word I got was they couldn’t come to the Green Moss after this Saturday. They have a meeting with Danzer at Nancy Locke’s place on Sunday.”
“I have to tell Jacob right away.” Pignast got up and went for his clothes draped over the end of the brass bed.
“No, don’t. Mortimer please wait until you see him at surgery on Monday. They might be watching you now and if you look like you’re heading out to Jacob’s place they’ll kill you.”
Pignast went back to the bed and lay beside her. “I have to tell him. Maybe you’re right. Nothing can happen until after Sunday.”
