Elle stared at the recreation of Mother Blue’s castle. She had no idea what any of this meant, and she wasn’t sure she wanted to. Kids weren’t supposed to fight bad guys or engage in mortal combat with monsters. She was smarter than a lot of people her age, but she felt there might be others who’d do a much better job than she could.
“Elle, you haven’t seen the complete gift. Look at the front door of the house.”
The door opened. Elle watched in amazement as an astonishing figure bent down to step out.
The Fiorin looked so much like Elle; they easily could be sisters, twins even. She wore a cyclamen-purple dress and had the same bright auburn hair that Elle did, combed in the same style. Her eyes were similarly autumn brown, but they were much larger relative to the rest of her face. She wore a crown of leaves on her head, and her iridescent, golden wings held a touch of lavender.
“Elle, this is Gracie. She’ll become your trusted counselor.”
