Cliff Richard was in town; Cynthia and Alyssa had never missed his show in Ottawa. But this time, Cynthia requested Tyler to take Alyssa to the show. Cynthia rested at home. Fun was more with rhythmic Alyssa and Tyler; they joined in many favourite songs: ‘So I’ve Been Told’, ‘You Don’t Know’, ‘Bachelor Boy’, ‘Summer Holiday’, and so on. Before the show, they had their dinner and champagne during the break. It was very late when mesmerized Tyler and Alyssa returned home.
‘Cynthia must be in the bed’ said Tyler, as he opened the door; Alyssa and Tyler went in. They heard a perplexing noise from the bathroom, they rushed and found Cynthia vomiting and vomiting very hard; the vomit was coming out of her body with the sheer force that made her restless; she tried to rest on the basin, but couldn’t, she fell on the floor.
The joy of the evening evaporated fast; Tyler called ambulance. The operator said, ‘please hold the patient, so that she doesn’t fall and injure herself.’
Ambulance arrived; both Tyler and Alyssa accompanied bewildered Cynthia. Emergency staff sent Cynthia straight to the operating theatre. With a few quick tests, doctors detected rupture in the oesophagus. Some food had slipped through oesophagus ruptures into the chest. The operation to clear food off the chest was scheduled hours later; a few pathological tests were required before that. The oesophagus was clamped at both mouth and stomach ends. Nutrients were supplied via intravenous drips.
Both Tyler and Alyssa went to see Cynthia before the operation; when they were waiting for the operation to be completed, Tyler got a message saying that when the doctors had cleared off one side of the chest, Cynthia had cardiac arrest and the procedure had to be abandoned, Cynthia was brought back to ICU. When Alyssa and Tyler were discussing who should go home and who should remain in the hospital for any errands, Alyssa received one SMS, which made her restless, disturbed and perplexed.
‘What happened?’ Tyler asked, ‘Do you’ve to go somewhere?’
‘Yes, my friend’s partner has a serious accident; she needs my immediate help. I’ve to go ASAP. I’d see you in the evening.’ With these words Alyssa disappeared, it was an emergency.
Alyssa didn’t tell Tyler where she was going to and details of the incumbent. In fact, the involved patient was Julian. So far Tyler knew that Julian was in Poland, Alyssa didn’t like to change her story.
Alyssa reached the hospital, where Julian was admitted a few days ago. The hospital staff told her, Julian had a heart attack last week. Since he was diabetic, he couldn’t decipher the symptoms; he was a bit clumsy in movements and went to his GP, who could immediately diagnose and sent him straight to the hospital. Alyssa found Julian in a coma; she was told the left side of Julian’s body, one hand and one leg were paralysed. In Julian’s mobile phone, Alyssa’s number was stored as ICE [In Case of Emergency] contact; so the hospital contacted her.
Julian’s hospitalisation put Alyssa in a very difficult position. As Alyssa was still Julian’s wife, she was obliged to concur or discard each hospital decision for procedures on him. She knew for certain, Julian didn’t want to involve her, but inadvertently he maintained Alyssa’s number as ICE contact and they hadn’t divorced.
