“There was once a small cottage on the island where the sunflower fields are now. Some notable people stayed in it over the years, but time and a storm damaged it. We took it apart and preserved what we could for repairs on other cottages, then we dug up the foundation and expanded the sunflower fields. Some of the best parts of the salvaged cottage are in this room.”
“Did you paint the sunflower field over the glass panes of the headboard?”
“Yeah. Other windows were smashed in the brunt of the storm, but this one faced the sunflower fields. It haunted me that guests in the cottage had enjoyed that view for decades, so I asked to keep it in the studio until we remodeled this room. One day, I had a vision for what it could be. I couldn’t stop painting.”
He hesitated with his hand on the doorknob. “The flowers are profitable, but the real reason we grow them is because they make us smile. They remind us that the sun always comes up on a new day, and yellow is the color of hope.”
She met his eyes and took an impulsive step toward him. “I’ve never been so full of hope, Wyeth, and it feels amazing.”
