Pierce kissed her again, stealing her breath as he traced the contours of her lips with his tongue before delving it in and battling it with hers.
By the time they parted, she burned as hot as the fire he so expertly wielded. It took every bit of her self-control to keep from stripping naked and mounting him right there. He was ready for her. His hard length pressed against her abdomen, but she preferred privacy. And although the urgency to stoke their passion was intense, she wanted to take her time with him, worship him as she hadn’t done the first time.
She groaned and stepped back. “I have to see the king and queen.”
Pierce’s gaze was wild with hunger. Rings of fire orbited his dilated pupils. He parted his luscious mouth, the tip of one fang peeking out from behind his upper lip.
It was like being dumped into an ice bath while sunbathing. Her breath caught. Wait…
She took a step back, followed by another, and another, never taking her eyes off him. This one sensual interlude had made her all but forget he was a vampire. And not just a vampire, but a newborn vampire. No longer could the bloodlust tonic be blamed for his bloodlust. Craving blood was as new to him as his recently acquired freedom.
Naomi had only to draw on her own experience to know that lust and bloodlust went hand-in-hand. If he fucked her, he’d drink from her.
How would his bite affect her? Would it turn her into a vampire? Could she trust him to stop when he’d had enough?
Pierce frowned. “Why are…” The flames in his irises changed from orange to red. “You’re afraid of me?”
The pain in his voice wounded her heart. She wanted to deny it, but she didn’t; she wasn’t sure if her denial would be a lie. “I… you look… hungry is all.”
He closed his eyes and tipped his head forward, then shoved his hands—which were now clawed, she noted—into his hair.
Mindlessly, Naomi stepped toward him, but stilled when he spoke.
“I would never hurt you, Naomi.” His voice was as soft as she’d ever heard it. He lifted his head and seared her with his fiery gaze. “Never on purpose, but…” Pursing his lips, he shook his head. “I don’t know what I am anymore. I don’t know what my bite will do, and I won’t lie. I do want to bite you. I want your blood.”
She held his gaze, not daring to move. Not wanting to move, unless it was nearer to him.
“I want to taste it; be nourished by it.” His cheeks went red. He broke eye contact and sunk into a slouch.
Oh, Pierce. His shame, so pronounced, touched her deeply, twisted her mind into knots.
She drew a shaky breath. For better or worse, she knew what she had to do. No way could she reject this man without proof that doing so was in her own best interest.
