Aegis of Pale’s tale left me speechless. I did not utter
another word as we rode through the grassy hills on the hedge-lined
path.
“There is Kings Path, the road that leads to all three
kingdoms. Those woods mark the area called Three Crowns, that I
mentioned earlier, where all three kingdoms meet,” Aegis said,
pointing to an unusual-looking forest in the distance.
“We will take Kings Path west to the kingdom of Pale, but
you can also take it north to the kingdom of Britannia, and, of
course, south to Tarshish,” he said.
Just as Aegis finished his sentence, three knights, clad in
full armor, came out of nowhere, racing up from behind us on
horseback. Their three black horses thundered directly toward us and
the forest path. I looked for a place to hide, but there was no way
out. The tall, thick hedges had us pinned in. Aegis and I maneuvered
our horses as close to the trail’s edge as possible, but closer and
closer they came. I braced myself for the impact.
