Topsey

Almost a Miracle

“E-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-k,” squealed Topsey.

He was caught in a rip current and the water was pushing and pulling him this way and that. He was sure he was being pushed out to sea.

That morning, two of Topsey’s buddies had come by his cave and said, “Topsey, let’s go for a swim. Let’s get some exercise.”

Turtella, Topsey’s wife, had looked at the sky and said, “It’s sort of a blustery day. The wind is gusting, and the waves are choppy. I don’t think it’s a good idea to go out in the water right now.”

She was so concerned because Topsey had been blinded in a chemical spill and needed to swim with companions. Topsey’s friends said they would all swim under the water, where it was calmer. This convinced Turtella to let Topsey go so the three friends set off under the water to have some fun.

They hadn’t been swimming very long when suddenly, they were caught in a terrible riptide. Topsey’s two friends started squealing at him, trying to keep him in sight, but soon they had all been separated, with the water pushing and pulling them in all directions. It reminded Topsey of the time he had been caught in the fast river where the toxic chemicals had spilled out. There had been an accident at the big plant and the toxic chemicals had spilled out of the big pipe and into the ocean. Topsey was caught in the river and couldn’t get out.

The chemicals had burned his body and his eyes, and he had been blinded as a result of this terrible incident. Now, he was in another fast river and couldn’t get out. He was squealing and squealing for his friends, but he could not find them. Finally, the water smoothed out and slowed down. Topsey kept squealing and calling to his friends, but there was no sign of them.

Topsey became so tired. He decided to go up to the surface of the water and try to float. Even though he tried looking around, he was not able to see anything because he was blind. All he could do was squeal and squeal. He didn’t even know which way to swim because he had gotten all turned around in the riptide. He was so-o-o frightened.
