Dealing With a Handicap
Topsey, unfortunately, was now settled with a severe handicap- he had completely lost his vision. The chemical spill had burned his eyes severely and ruined them. Do you or someone close to you have a severe handicap? How do you deal with it? With no vision, Topsey had to navigate through the ocean and his school room using his flippers, his head, his smell, his awareness of the water currents. He also had to rely heavily on his students and friends for direction. Otherwise, he could still swim, he could still talk to his students and friends, he could still taste the kelp in his garden to make sure it was growing correctly. In other words, he did not give up on living, and being productive and happy. He also tried to find ways to have fun, and this usually involved other turtles or sea creatures. But his friends enjoyed helping him, and he enjoyed doing what he could t make their lives better. The lesson is, never give up!

Topsey
Topsey was thinking with satisfaction about his school. He had been the teacher at the Turtle School for many years now. Two years ago, he had four students, Waxie, Maxie, Cheryl and Beryl. The summer following that school year is when he had a terrible accident and lost his vision. At first, he didn’t think he would be able to continue teaching but all his friends encouraged him to keep at it. His friend Octopus had come and built a shell sculpture to make his cave beautiful and more interesting, especially when the sunlight reflected off the shells. It made his cave sparkle and glow, much to everyone’s’ amazement. Also, his friends had come to help, and they had moved the school room to his cave. He was able to continue teaching without having to swim out in the big ocean.
