Topsey then told his students that perhaps they could help Tivy learn to get around a little better. He said, “Tivy, would you like us to help you learn how to use your back flippers better, since you don’t have any front flippers?”
Tivy said, “That would be great!”
They had a brain storming session. Topsey asked everyone how they could do this. Topsey liked the way they all had ideas about this, and finally they decided that if they could help Tivy get up on his hind flippers, maybe he could learn to walk only using those. The four older turtles made a staircase of rocks, going from shortest to tallest. They told Tivy to start at the smallest rock, and using his neck and head, and balancing with his shell, to move up to the second largest rock. Placing his head on the second rock, he could move up to the next largest rock. Repeating this he could continue moving up the rocks until he got to the top rock. When he got up there, he would be balancing with his head and standing on his hind flippers balanced against the tallest rock.
Tivy got so excited that he fell backwards, tumbling head over toe and went KERPLOOP, right into the water. Tivy laughed and laughed and everybody else laughed and laughed, too. Tivy was such a cheerful little fellow that everyone grew to like him instantly.
