I was a working girl all my life, either teaching school or working in the private sector. In the year 2000, I suffered a stroke which left me blind in my left eye. I retired in 2008, at which time I started doing things for enjoyment, such as baby-sitting my grandchildren, indulging in craft activities, volunteer work, and delving into my life-long passion of learning to paint. In the year 2016, I suffered a stroke in my right eye that left that eye blind also. I had lived successfully for 16 years with one good eye. Suddenly, at age 70, I had to start a new life as a totally blind person. I had no outlet for my creative energies. However, I wanted to tell my story and be productive in some way, so I turned to writing. My first endeavor produced a series of children's books entitled, Topsey the Blind Sea Turtle. This story tells how Topsey is able to succeed with help from his friends and family. I am working on a new science-fiction novel that addresses my concern with many humanitarian issues in today's world.
Topsey suffered a terrible blow when he accidentily swam into the chemical spill, which burned his eyes and made him loose his vision, totally. he was very depressed all during the summer because of this. He thought he would not be able to do his teaching at the turtle school. But with the encouragment of his friends, he decided to give it a try, and he was succsesful in adapting his job with his new disabiity.
If you suffer a severe disability, as Topsey did, and as I did, dont think its the end of your life. When it happened to me, all i could think about were the things i could no longer do. after about six months, a voice in my head said, "So you cant do the things you used to do. what CAN you do."
I remember the statement almost knocked me off my heals. I started taking inventory of myself to decide what i COULD do. my first thought was that my brain was still functional, as the strokes only seem to effect my eyes. it was like starting a new life. i began in eaarnest to think about what i could do, and i realized that since my brain still worked i could write, and the story of Topsey was born.

Topsey
Topsey was thinking with satisfaction about his school. He had been the teacher at the Turtle School for many years now. Two years ago, he had four students, Waxie, Maxie, Cheryl and Beryl. The summer following that school year is when he had a terrible accident and lost his vision. At first, he didn’t think he would be able to continue teaching but all his friends encouraged him to keep at it. His friend Octopus had come and built a shell sculpture to make his cave beautiful and more interesting, especially when the sunlight reflected off the shells. It made his cave sparkle and glow, much to everyone’s’ amazement. Also, his friends had come to help, and they had moved the school room to his cave. He was able to continue teaching without having to swim out in the big ocean
