“Marriage is hardly trivial, my dear,” he told her gravely. “It is a most important decision. One of the most important in a young lady’s life. Which is why I plan to be quite thorough when choosing your future husband.”
“You?” she asked, alarmed. “You will choose my future husband? Not me?” She put the teacup down with a thump on a nearby table, hastily nailed together with rough boards for the party. “Then I fail to see why I am even here. Clearly my presence is superfluous to these proceedings.” She took a deep breath but did not hide her glare from her father.
