“It seems I fancy Tory, and Tory fancies Alec, and Alec fancies Tory, but I also think Tory fancies me,” Brodie blurted out.
“Hmm” was all Hamish said.
“That’s a lot of fancying,” Conall said. “Are you and Alec fighting about it, then?”
“No,” Brodie said. “He’s got it in his thick head that he’s not good enough for her. Can you imagine?”
Hamish and Conall were both shaking their head. “A piper? Not good enough?” Conall said in disbelief. “She’d be lucky indeed.”
“Indeed,” Hamish agreed.
“That’s what I said!” Brodie told them. He turned to face them and walked backward. “So, I’m trying to get them together.”
“Is that what she wants?” Hamish asked with a frown.
“I think so.” Brodie thought about how sad Tory had been when Alec didn’t kiss her. “Yes, I’m sure it is.”
“Well then,” Hamish said, as if it was settled.
“Aye,” Connie agreed. “Sorry I am, Brodie. I know you fancy her.”
“She can’t do better than Alec,” Brodie said, falling back into step with his brothers.
“True, true,” Hamish said. “Except you, of course.”
