Singer-songwriter Mike Spears has announced the release of his debut book, Reason Why I Sing. To protect the identities of those involved, Mike turned what was supposed to be a no-holds-barred tell all story about his experience as an artist for a major label, into a fictional drama-filled cautionary tale. Even though names, companies, and other details have been changed the stories documented are all based on real-life events.
The glitz, glam, fame, and fortune have lured millions to the audition lines of star making shows like; American Idol, X-Factor and the Voice. But what we see on television is only a small fraction of the true reality people may face. “Reason Why I Sing” host heart-wrenching details of what may await for hopefuls as they enter the entertainment business.
During his time as a signed artist, Spears recalls being sexually manipulated by other men in the music business. For the first time, Mike Spears opens up about the struggles of being gay/bi-sexual in a heterosexual dominated industry and his close encounters with HIV/AIDS.
“I am exposing a lot about myself. I become completely naked and allow my flaws to show in this story. I’ve lived a life where I have pretended to be more than I was, till one day I was sick of myself. I had grown annoyed with who I was because it was fake and lacking substance,” says Spears of those days.
Mike Spears, the true definition of multi-talented. Coming from the small impoverished community of Pembroke, Illinois has seasoned Mike with a keen humble spirit that’s destined for success. Landing a major recording contract with Universal Music Group, Mike has proven himself as a singer/ songwriter. Leading him to perform and appear on major networks like; MTV, BET, VH1, and FOX. After a few singles failing to chart, and a fully un-released album Mike found himself at odds with life and the music business. Taking a hiatus from the music business to literally travel around world as an Entertainment Host for a cruise line has kept him busy for over three years now. While traveling the world, Mike took out time to write about his life and experiences as a recording artist in a book titled Reason Why I Sing.
