TRANSPORT IS EVERYONE’S favourite oil subject. After all, we almost touch oil when we fill our cars. Moreover, oil lets us see our friends and family. We use it to visit ancient wonders and encounter new cultures. We travel to enjoy more pleasant environments and take advantage of shopping and leisure facilities. Nevertheless, oil serves us best as the beating heart of commerce. We use oil to move goods from low- to high-wage economies, open new markets for products and services, and exchange raw materials and skills. In this chapter, we will look at our primary modes of transport and ask how they can be less oily. You will find third-generation biofuels, hydrogen-powered cars and sailing ships – all of which have a part to play in the future of transport. But first, let’s run through the history of transportation, how it uses oil and its economic importance.
