Keeping a Backyard Horse
When you first bring your new horse home, there are a few things to keep in mind to help him acclimate to his new surroundings. Horses have two halves of the brain, like people do, but often the two halves don't talk to one another, and each eye sees a different view of what's around him. When you bring your horse into his new pen for the first time, you should lead him around the outer perimeter first going in one direction, then in the other direction. This allows him to see his new home using both eyes, and it helps him to process his new boundaries. You should use this same strategy when taking him into a barn for the first time as well. Allow him to fully see the area with both eyes.
