I have experienced many crises of faith over the years but few as intense as the one that washed over me during a 2018 MRI: By the time I left the hospital, I was viewing every life choice I had ever made as a terrible mistake. It took a dream three days later to jar me out of it. And I didn’t even remember the dream until I glanced at the clock in my car the next morning and noticed that it was 11:11. In the dream it’s 11:11 on November 11, Remembrance Day in my native Canada, and I suddenly remember that I forgot to pause for the traditional moment of silent remembrance. The dream, I realized in that moment, was a call to remember who I am: not the Mark David Gerson who was flailing in despair, but a powerful being of light, a courageous journeyer traveling the Way of the Fool.

The Way of the Fool
Who are you? You are more than a mass of skin, bone, muscle and sinew. More than the blood pumping through your heart and coursing through your veins. More than the breath that flows into your lungs and out again. More than all the cells that unite to shape your physical body.
You are more than your brain’s incomparable power to reason, compute, calculate and recall. More than its immeasurable ability to amass, assess, organize and analyze.
You are stronger than the most muscular of machines, more resilient than the most elastic of rubbers, more powerful than the most formidable of turbines.
You are greater than the sum of your emotions. Greater, certainly, than your fear. You are passion and compassion. You are generosity and benevolence. You are boundless courage. You are love without limit. You are a miracle of heart and soul.
You are the Infinite expressing itself in finite form. You are divine perfection living as the perfect expression of human imperfection.
You are a human being who too easily forgets all that.So take a moment to remember who you are!
