Myth #3: Without an Outline (and without Index Cards), I Will Never Write a Coherent Script
According to orthodox screenwriting dictates, you must never write a single word of your screenplay until you have prepared a comprehensive, scene-by-scene outline and filled out a stack of index cards to go with it. Launching into a screenplay without these necessary tools, this school of screenwriting insists, sets you up for certain failure. The Final Draft website goes even further, calling for an “insanely detailed” outline that “even describes what the dialogue will be in every scene.”
Reality #3
Outlines Are Overrated and Can Stifle the Free Flow of Your Creativity
Remember Myth #1? There can be no absolutes where creativity is concerned, and dogma of any kind forces your words and story into a straitjacket of preconceptions and expectations.
