“We’ll both leave on Friday,” Eugenio recaps as we’re finalising things. “But, I’ll fly out in the morning. I’ve organised for Paolo to drive you down. The black Ford will have to be packed with all the things we’ll need for the show.”
Paolo is Esther’s sixteen-year-old son. I stare at Eugenio incomprehensibly. Not only am I the one who must undergo a long hot car journey, but I’ll be accompanied by a teenager who barely talks and who hasn’t been driving for very long. I jump up, about to shout my refusal, when I decide instead to turn around and walk out of the room. I hear someone call my name, but I just keep on straight out of the shop. It’s obvious the decision has been made but I don’t have to like it. I stroll around the block to compose myself, hoping that my action has caused Eugenio to think about his decision. When I get back though, he has gone out to see a customer. Codardo! Coward!
