It’s a couple of days later that Eugenio receives a call from Dirce. After only a few minutes, he returns to the front of the shop. I look up expectantly. He’s been very quick. All the same, I’m hoping to hear some news.
“Tesoro, you need to sit down.”
“Why? What’s happened?” My throat closes with fear.
“It’s Pina. Your mamma. She died during the night in her sleep.”
“No, no.” I refuse to accept his statement.
“She was just missing your nonna too much.”
“But, it’s only been a couple of months. Both of them? They can’t both be gone!” I stare up at him shaking my head. “It’s not fair. It doesn’t make sense.” That’s when the tears start. “I have to fly back to Italy,” I say, gasping with sobs.
