A thought from chapter 4, we have to be realistic with our expectations and date the person, not the idea of the person. We often get caught up in the "idea" of what we want, and not the reality of the situation...

The Truth: Keepin' It 100
We’ve all heard that women put too much pressure on men. We’ve also heard that women shouldn’t settle for less or diminish their standards just so they can have a man. Both of these are true, but here’s the breakdown. The truth is, if we look deeper than what our standards are, maybe we can see that diamond in the rough. Let me explain. First of all women like to use the phrase ‘settling for less,’ and in some cases it’s true. But I’m talking about a guy that goes to work every day, has a crap paying job, drives a beat up car, and stays in a tiny one bedroom apartment. And women would see that package and say, “I ain’t settling for that!” Then those same women ask why they don’t have a man. That’s how a lot of women look at it. But the women who have graduated look at it as straight up potential. So what if a guy has his own place and a job, but he’s riding the bus? Would he be a candidate? I’ll let you answer that yourself. After reading this book maybe you’ll have a different opinion or a different answer than your usual. And of course this is only an example. He may or may not have all of these but at least two of the three. I don’t think that’s asking too much. I mentioned The Rule of Three earlier. If a person is working hard for what they want, the Rule of Three is sometimes tough to maintain, but it will be commonplace. Every adult should be working to have at the very least their own car, their own place, and a steady job, hopefully working on a career. So, if you asked me what I wanted in a potential woman, I’d say the same: a woman with her own place, who makes her own money, and has her own place. And then we can prosper together and become a power couple. And no one can stop a power couple. Now for me, it doesn’t matter if those things are subpar, because I can work with potential, and we’re going to come up together. I just have to upgrade her. But most of the time it’s the other way around, and women usually have to upgrade their guy. So you just have to upgrade your model. The engine may run perfectly, but you may need some cosmetic work done on the body. Don’t be so quick to judge. He may not be up to your standards and drive a Benz, or make 18 dollars an hour, or stay in a two or three bedroom condo or house, but the potential you may be passing up is far greater than what the wrapping on the outside of the box may suggest. It’s good to have standards. I tell my daughter to do so. But I’m realizing that not every woman’s standards are the same, and some aren’t even realistic. These days it’s much harder than it used to be to maintain these things. But a man who will work in spite of his conditions is a keeper. He’s a diamond in the rough. He will break his back working for his family, and all you have to do is get him, put what he has with what you have, and then become a power couple. Most people don’t realize that they may have a winner right there, but these days we are all about cosmetics and aesthetics; the way things look on the outside.
