Chasing Yesterday
He grabbed his truck keys off his bureau and quietly made his way downstairs. He hesitated once and held his breath after stepping on the creaky stairs, but when no one stirred or called out he continued. While pulling on his snow boots in the back hallway directly off the kitchen, he noticed the donation bag his mother had pulled together. Before sneaking out, he grabbed the ice scraper brush and, at the last minute, an old scarf from the bag destined for Goodwill.
The cold hit him, causing a shiver, and he breathed in the scent of smoke from a nearby chimney. The wind kicked up and blew a gust of snow from a nearby tree, squarely hitting his face as he quickly pulled the door shut. The backdoor light snapped on with the movement and he surveyed the snow that had built up over what had been shoveled the night before. He could drive over the few additional inches with his truck but decided to clean up the driveway and front walkway for his parents when he returned.
Trudging past his truck to the end of the driveway, he turned up the unshoveled sidewalk toward the Anderson’s still dark house, head down against the wind. He quickly wrapped the old plaid scarf around the snowman’s neck with a tie to keep it in place. With a nod to his work, he turned back to his truck. The crunching snow underfoot sounded loud in the early morning stillness. As he climbed into his truck and started the engine, he smiled to himself knowing the Anderson kids would get a kick out of the magical addition overnight and knowing that in a few hours, when Katie woke and looked out her window, she would see her car cleaned off with a snow heart on her windshield. He’d give anything to see that smile light up her face but was just satisfied knowing she would be smiling for him.
