I glance at the sky, looking for inspiration, a memory to pull strength from. But there’s not a single plane in sight. That image from earlier still claws at me. I want it back. It’ll keep me going, delay the inevitable.
I must try again. I trust the Queen to guide me there.
I close my eyes and spin the card. Over and over, I spin and concentrate. Spin and concentrate…
The air smells of spring and flowers. The atmosphere is thick with wonder and excitement. I’m standing on the couch, gazing outside my living room window, watching a yellow tractor move back and forth across the lawn. Blonde hair appears in the corner of my eye. I’m not alone. The wind blows her hair against my face. It tickles my cheek. Soft music plays in the background behind her playful laugh. Her baby-blue eyes peer down at me above her happy, smiling lips. I look down and study her pink-tipped fingers and red heels—
It’s gone.
It was Lauren, my babysitter. I was five.
My heart pounds as though it’s trying to escape, like a prisoner inside my chest. My arms feel stronger now. My mind fresher. I stare at the card gripped in my hand. The Queen stares back. She’s still the only woman guaranteed to stay by my side, as long as I hold her close to me.
