In My Journey with Bernie, Kacey Carpenter shares his personal story and lessons learned from people he met during the campaign, at caucuses and primaries, and conventions. Along his journey, he gains trust in the power of people with renewed optimism for “A Future to Believe In.” “Look it's not about me, it's about us, and when we stand together we can do anything,” Bernie Sanders tells the volunteers at the Reno Rally in December 2015, pointing his finger directly at me, Kacey recalls, urging all of us to do more. “At that moment,” Kacey says, “I feel the Bern.” Soon, he is co-leading 300 people from 30 states to go to Iowa for the first Democratic Party caucus to begin a journey traveling around the country and the world.

Author Biography

Kacey Carpenter is a community organizer, volunteer, technology innovator, parent, and author. He served as a Bernie Sanders delegate at the 2016 Democratic National Convention and as a volunteer to get out the vote in California and ten other states, including co-leading 300 people from 30 states to Iowa. Kacey's journey with Bernie inspired him to continue to fight for the people. With a career spanning three decades in the technology industry, he led global teams focused on the intersection of technology innovation and public sector transformation. He collaborated with local, state, and national government organizations leading initiatives for healthcare, justice, community policing, and smart communities around the world. He holds an MBA from The Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science degree from UCLA. In My Journey with Bernie, I share my experience with the Bernie Sanders’ Campaign and the 2016 DNC. I’m #stillSanders, and Bernie is leading the charge to take on the oligarchs. The energy on the road this year has been nothing short of extraordinary. From North Las Vegas to Tucson, Bernie’s message has resonated like never before. In Las Vegas, over 3,200 showed up—outpacing Trump’s January rally. In Tempe, 15,000 Arizonans gathered in a non-campaign event, surpassing the previous record by thousands. In Colorado, Greeley saw 11,300 attend, and Denver’s rally brought in an astounding 34,000 people, the largest rally Bernie has ever held. Even in Tucson, a last-minute rally saw over 23,000 people packing a football stadium, showing just how deep the hunger for real change runs. The message is clear: the people want to fight back. We are ready to take on the oligarchs and reclaim our democracy from corporate greed and authoritarianism. But this fight isn’t just about big rallies. My Journey with Bernie

DNC: TUESDAY, JULY 26, 2016

Tuesday morning the alarm clock rings loudly, another early morning wake up with only a few hours of sleep. But, I am excited since today I will vote for Bernie.

I wait in line to get credentials at the registration tables and am proud to cast my official delegate vote for Bernie Sanders for President. On the one hand, I am thrilled that I have cast my vote. But, I am also exhausted, completely drained from the experience, standing in bus lines in the heat, cheering and booing, and with very little sleep.

As we find our tables for breakfast, we are all exhausted and becoming depressed as we know our challenge is enormous, but today there is still hope, there is still an opportunity. With nearly 1900 delegates for Bernie, we still had our last chance to convince the superdelegates to “flip” their votes.

There is another lineup of speakers this morning, but the breakfast crowd is subdued today without protests only quiet conversations as we refuel with hot coffee and breakfast.

I am listening quietly and applauding politely to the words of Congressman John Lewis, sharing his story of activism in the civil rights movement.^²⁰³ His speech is compelling, and I hope that I have the same commitment to the issues that he has demonstrated in his life of service and activism. I listen to the respectful and polite applause as he concludes his speech.

Suddenly, there is commotion at the podium. Bernie is walking towards the stage with Jane at his side to deliver an un-announced speech to the delegates. His appearance is a surprise, and immediately all the Bernie delegates rush to the stage like fans at a rock concert. Bernie is speaking with Jane at his side, thanking all the California delegates for Bernie crowd the stage with loud cheers and applause, until support and vote today. Then, he explains that we must defeat Trump
