The big guy with a bald, pointy head is the assistant principal. He’s the enforcer. The two other guys with him look like Secret Service in their white shirts, black pants, and ties. Except they’re too flabby to be real Secret Service. They grab the boys but not the girls. They tell us to follow them to the office. We march along the corridor, kids all staring at us. I want to disappear.
The office is the same fishbowl I was in yesterday when Aunt Sophia dropped me off like a dog at the shelter. The two girls—Amy, Miss Headband, and her friend Evelyn—tried to get out of coming, but Bullet Head—Mr. DiGiorno—tells them to stop arguing and fall in. Yup, he says fall in like we’re in the army. Inside the office, Amy steps up and starts again with the “We weren’t doing anything,” but DiGiorno holds up a beefy hand. She shuts up. Thank God.
