JESS BURST INTO the stabling area with Kevyn in tow.
“Where were you?” she cried, spotting Cory crouched down by Epi’s hind leg, wrapping it in thick bandages. “We looked all over for you afterwards. And then they announced you were quitting!”
Cory stood up slowly. “I’m not quitting.” She laid a hand gently on Epi’s belly. “I’m simply withdrawing.” She shot Jess a look, expecting a smart remark from her, and when she got none, added, “Epi’s sick.”
Kevyn wrapped Cory in his arms without saying a word. She rested, pressing her body against his. She rubbed the sore side of her cheek against the soft, brushed cotton of his t-shirt, but then pulled back.
“Guys, really, it’s okay. It will be okay.”
