The show’s vet was a thin man dressed in an olive-green coverall with the name of his veterinary practice embroidered on the breast pocket. Cory kept her eyes on the embroidered name and avoided his eyes as he explained in his quiet, patient voice what he had found after examining Epi. His speech was sprinkled with strange words: protozoa, ataxia, nervosa, and paralysis. The words, like black flies, buzzed around Cory’s head, never lighting on her consciousness.
Vee kept asking questions. It seemed as if she was trying to make the vet say something they could pin their hopes to, some way to take action, base decisions on. Instead, he demonstrated how Epi circled her foot before she placed it and how she staggered when he pulled her off balance by her tail.
“Neurological symptoms,” he explained.
