The arena was enormous, the fences huge. After a canter circle to set the pace, she looked for the first jump—a red and white vertical—drawing them into it. The noise from the crowd faded into a low, background hum. As she picked up speed, her peripheral vision blurred like a film tape running by too fast.
Epi levitated off the ground.
The horse’s rhythmic breathing floated to Cory’s ears. Epi flew over the fences as if she could read Cory’s mind, anticipating what she’d ask before she even asked it. The gray horse flew around sharp turns, set herself back, and waited coming into the wide obstacles, and upon landing, immediately sought out the next fence. Cory was giddy with the sensation she had grown wings and could run as fast as a gale-force wind. She forgot about everything and everyone besides her and Epi and the fence in front of them.
