Vee poked a stray hair down into her loose ponytail. Her eyes cut away. “Well, it gets a little crazy from this point, probably just a confused old man talking, you know.”
“What?” Cory demanded.
“He claimed the horse was magic, like I said.” She rushed to add, “Not like I believe any of that stuff, but he told me a really weird story.”
They both looked at Epiphany. The mare shifted her weight onto the other back leg and swung her head around to look at them with a bored expression.
“She doesn’t look magical to me.” Cory gave her an affectionate slap on her hindquarters.
Vee sat down on a large tack trunk and was immediately joined by one of the Jack Russells that leapt up to join her. She stroked the little dog’s head.
“Seems it was his wife who was the first to notice strange things happening. She said everything started going better right after they bought Epi. I wasn’t convinced until Mr. Hammerschmidt told me this story about a little boy. Gave me chills.”
