She was grateful to be back in the warmth of Florida, even though Asheville wasn’t as cold as the Chicago autumns and winters she’d grown up enduring. More importantly, she was grateful to have a second chance at love. Turning her gaze from the window, she watched Jeremy asleep beside her in the king-sized bed. He was so charming with a full head of dark hair, just beginning to gray at the temples that framed a peaceful expression. She imagined the gears and pulleys of his logical mind sorting and reorganizing every detail he’d observed during the previous day.
The gentle rise and fall of his bare, sun-bronzed chest was reassuring. She could see the rhythm of his heart, the pulse in his neck, which was angled away from her toward the brightening world beyond the window. She set her hand on his chest, as she often did, to feel the life beneath it–broad, solid, healthy–and was moved by how much she loved him.
