As far as I had known, Dad’s name was William Ray Cannon. I learned that the entire family had long awaited a boy to enter the picture, and with four older sisters naming a boy was not going to be easy. As the story goes, each sister had been determined to name him what she wanted. There were many fights among the siblings, which resulted in no name actually being chosen.
With all the squabbling about Dad’s name, his mother just chose to ignore the fact that he didn’t actually have a name at all. She let all those high-spirited girls call him by the name they wanted . . . and this continued all his life. One called him Bud and one called him Preacher (I have no clue why), but then this name was shortened to Preach. One called him Buck and one called him Ray. His dad called him Billy and his mother just called him Baby.
