Pepi took Wright and I to town this afternoon. Darling it is a shame how this town is torn up. All the buildings are torn up either by bombs or artillery. In all of them there are bullet holes where the Japs and Americans went house to house fighting. I honestly didn’t see a single one of the larger buildings that could be of any use. They are torn to pieces.
Manila must have been a beautiful city because the buildings were of Greek and Roman architecture and were all painted white. Now it is nothing at all. The merchants have their goods and tables next to the sidewalk to carry on their business. I feel sorry for these people. They haven’t started to rebuild yet. I guess they haven’t much faith left.
