The antithesis of personal authenticity is the culturally embedded “Now-I’m-Supposed-Tos,” or NISTs, as I call them. You know what I’m talking about. NISTs are the currency of both peer pressure and societal pressure to be and achieve certain things in a certain order. Now-I’m-Supposed-To: go to college, get a job, get married, have children, just to name a few of the more universal NISTs prevalent in our culture.
Ridding ourselves of these NISTs is easier said than done. Yet to do so, to recognize your own NISTs and evaluate them in terms of your authentic self, is to move ever closer to achieving inner harmony.
