Then, during one of our gatherings, we were discussing ways of knowing, intuiting, sensing—all the ways we knew there to be of receiving, sending, and processing information. One of these ways, relegated now to the annals of esoteric ancient Christian theology, is gnosis, a (feminine!) Greek noun meaning knowledge attained through spiritual enlightenment or mystical means.
Our conversation that day led us to the conviction that the feminine intuitive way of knowing, one that is often informed by the unseen world, such a knowing-sensing, should have its own word, different from the overworked “to know.” With tips of our collective hat to the whimsy of gyns, the wisdom of the Gnostics, and the irony of homophones…out it came: the term to gnow was born.
